有意捐献的公众,可以发电邮到tangent.the@gmail.com,或致电92466400。
Press Release for Education at Large:
An Exhibition of Student Life and Activities In Singapore, 1945-1965
Organised by The Tangent
The Tangent is pleased to announce their plans on Education at Large: Student Life and Activities in Singapore, 1945-1965. This is an exhibition bringing together artefacts and texts from that period testifying to participation in cultural, sports and socio-political activities by students of English- and Chinese-medium schools. It aims to broaden our understanding of Singapore抯 educational history in the transitional period of post-war years and the country抯 independence. Education at Large also seeks to understand the ways in which student life and activities and resonated with, and contributed to, decolonisation processes as well as the wider social, political and cultural life of Singapore during the period.
The exhibition will take place in November 2007 at The Singapore Management University, and The Tangent is calling for donations of relevant objects from institutions and the general public until December 2006. These objects should reflect the range of extra-curricular activities at the time (eg. sports, uniformed groups and clubs of various interests and activities outside schools), students?general concerns and interests, and students?responses to major social and political developments. Objects of interest include school magazines, school newsletters, photos, badges, song-sheets, medals, performance programs, props, sportswear, uniforms, awards, costumes, drawings, cartoons, memoirs, diaries, essays and actual preserved writings from the period.
An important part of Education at Large will be the involvement of Singapore students themselves, primarily in the collection of artefacts and researching the history of student extra-curricular activity in their respective schools. Thus they will bring a contemporary slant in the construction of perspectives offered by the exhibition.
The Tangent is a Singaporean civil society group which discusses issues mainly in the Chinese language and promotes cross-cultural communication among different segments of society. The group publishes a biannual bilingual journal and holds regular forums with local and overseas intellectuals.
Through the viewing of the exhibition, perusal of associated materials (e.g. the catalogue, bibliography and possible anthologies of texts), and forums to be held during the same period, Education at Large encourages visitors of all ages to reflect on their own experiences in formal education in Singapore, and to bring up questions of education and activities in both this transitional period and the present. It is hoped that with a broader sense of how student life has evolved since World War II, more nuanced and complex perceptions of both of Singapore抯 past and its present will be formed, and thus pave the way to deal with an increasingly complicated future.
